The Stanton Bird Club is set to host its annual meeting with North Yarmouth naturalist and wildlife artist Michael Boardman as speaker.

The focus of his talk will be the birds of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The meeting will be held at the L/A Arts Gallery, 168 Lisbon St. in Lewiston, with social time starting at 2 p.m. and Boardman’s talk at 2:30 p.m. The public is welcome.

Known for his field sketching and watercolors of creatures and wild lands, Boardman has connected his art to wildlife science through artist residencies at Baxter State Park (2010), Acadia National Park (2012), Glacier Bay National Park (2015) and Hog Island Audubon Camp (2017), according to a news release from Jeri Maurer with the club.

Boardman was selected in 2019 to be the artist in residence for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He was flown to the coastal plain of the refuge that June to spend two weeks at the Canning River Bird Camp. There he helped in the study of migrating birds breeding on the tundra.

He will share his unique experience in an extreme environment, with plenty of artwork and field sketches as well as stories about how the avian life of the refuge connects people to that endangered landscape.

The Stanton Bird Club owns and manages the Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary in Lewiston as well as the Woodbury Nature Sanctuary in Monmouth and Litchfield. More information can be found at stantonbirdclub.org and on the club’s Facebook page.

The meeting is free of charge. To register, call the club at 888-363-0007.
