West Paris Public Library is set to host Star Party, a free astronomy evening for all ages, from 7:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at the 226 Main St. library.
Two experienced, amateur astronomers will be on hand, along with their telescopes, binoculars and planispheres. Attendees can bring any binoculars or scopes.
Facilitators will be Rick Chase of Waterford and Terry Robinson of South Paris. They have observed and offered programs at the Twitchell Observatory, now located at Robert’s Farm Preserve in Norway, and Chase is a lifelong astronomy enthusiast, according to a news release from Brenda Lynn Gould, library director.
Those who attend can learn how to identify constellations, find out the names of certain bright stars, and observe a planet in the solar system.
From the library’s parking lot, one may be able to see Saturn, and later on, Jupiter, and possibly some deep sky objects, depending upon obstructions and how much light is around the parking lot.
The library has two small tabletop telescopes available for checking out, and one will be in use that night as well.
People can show up anytime during the event and should dress properly for the cooler evening temperatures.
There is no charge to participate.
