Penny A. Guyaz

WINTHROP – Penny Guyaz died June 24 following a swift cancer bout. She is survived by husband, Norman; children, Ethan, Kiri and Darren; and siblings Meril, Dan and Holly. She was predeceased by her parents, Aubigne/Hugh Smith; and siblings Tony and Bethany.

Bangor-raised, Penny graduated UMO in 1966 with a BA in English/History, Phi Beta Kappa/Phi Kappa Phi. She met Norm and converted him to a lifelong love of nature. Music was her other great passion; she had a beautiful voice and sang in CODA Chorus 40 yrs. She was also in Kennebec Rock and Mineral Club. She taught English, music, geology, marine biology and costumed plays. She was a talented watercolorist and enjoyed showing her art.

Penny had a belief in the beauty of life, an optimism in the wider universe, and a playful side, sassy to the very end. Penny believed in passing on the help she’d been given all her life: since there is no way to repay it, the only thing to do is to pass it on. Always believing in and sharing herself with others, Penny touched hearts and lives.
