NORRIDGEWOCK – Janet L. Laney, 89, passed away unexpectedly at her home Nov. 15, 2023.

She was born Nov. 25, 1933, in Cambridge, the daughter of Leon Spofford and Cora York Spofford, and was the second youngest of 10 children. Janet attended elementary school in Athens and graduated from Skowhegan High School.

She and her first husband, Douglas Bean, had one child, Linda. Douglas Bean died in 1985. She later married Donald Laney who died in 2016.

Janet worked at F.W. Woolworth and Co. in Skowhegan for 33 years and later, for Keenan Auction Co. She loved knitting, crafts, cooking dinners at her beloved church, Life Church, of Norridgewock, and doing puzzles with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Murray Swett and her husband, Garry Swett, of Athens; and grandchildren, Jamie Murray of Skowhegan, Christopher and Tina Murray of Rockland and Brandy Murray of Bingham. She also is survived by seven great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Kathleen and Pam, as well as anonymous friends at Janet’s church. A funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m., Nov. 29, at Life Church, 344 Skowhegan Rd., Norridgewock. Arrangements by Smart and Edwards Funeral Home.
