Marguerite Jeannette Atkins
GARDINER – Marguerite Jeannette Atkins went home to Jesus peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Dec. 4, 2023, at the age of 93. Marguerite was born on July 26, 1930, in Gardiner, to Evelyn Peterson-Brooks and David Farnham.
Marguerite was predeceased by her parents, stepfather, Benjamin Brooks; her husband, George Atkins; and two sisters, Barabra Kelley and Gertrude Thomas.
She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Brooks; and her three children, Michael Atkins (Nancy), Patricia Robinson (Larry), Susan Giampetruzzi (son-in-law Peter); eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two devoted nieces, Pamela (Atkins) Cote and Gale (Perron) Black.
She started her employment at Healthtex in South Gardiner sewing kids’ clothes. She then worked at Associated Grocers in the business office in South Gardiner, while going to Gates College in Augusta for a Business Management degree. After college she worked for the Department of Mental Health in the Central Office as an accountant. She then transferred to Augusta Mental Health Institute as a supervisor of the Accountant Clerical Business office where she retired.
Marguerite, a beautiful mother, grandmother, and friend leaves behind cherished memories. An active member of the South Gardiner Congregational Church, who was very devoted to her worship and shared her love for Jesus with her children and grandchildren. She was a worthy matron of Marion Chapter of Gardiner, Maine, exemplifying dedication, and leadership within her community.
Her home welcomed many sleepovers with her grandchildren. Her famous French toast became a symbol of joy and warmth, a tradition that will be carried on with love. Marguerite found joy in playing cards with her dear friends and embarked on countless adventures alongside her predeceased companion, Elmer Andrews.
Marguerite’s warm presence and kindness touched the heart of all who know her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A warm appreciation and thanks to the dedicated and compassionate staff at the Alzheimer’s Care Center in Gardiner. Their care and support made a significant difference in her daily life.
Her burial and celebration of life will be held in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
