The Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee in Augusta will hold a public hearing on the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact this coming Monday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m. Since the legislation was tabled last year, I am very grateful to see it get an early start as our state government begins its new session.
Passing this legislation would have a positive impact for Maine. First off, candidates for public office would benefit from holding campaign events in our state, something that rarely happens now, and which would bring added revenue. Voters in all states would matter, not just the most populated. One person-one vote is a principle we can agree on, and the person who comes to occupy the Oval Office should be the one who was voted in by the majority of Americans.
Maine empowers itself by joining this Compact, and it empowers its residents as well. We would all do ourselves a favor by sending word of our support to Augusta, to our representatives and to the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.
