Gov. Janet Mills is proposing a state government agency (Office for New Americans) to help immigrants move to Maine. Charles Colgan, economist at the University of Southern Maine, predicted in 2013 that there would be tough times ahead for Maine unless somehow Maine could persuade 3,000 young people per year for 20 years to move to Maine.
Speaking of young people, Colgan said, “There are not half enough of them (workers) because not enough young people are born here.” Colgan has said more than he knows. H.P. 1897 was passed in 1974, allowing abortions until viability. About 125,000 abortions have been performed in Maine since then, and of those 125,000, about 65,000 would be between the ages of 18 and 50, the peak working years.
This is indeed ironic for Mills, who is a supporter of abortion on demand and wants to quickly “fix” the problem that she and many others have created white the tax base still exists. It is as though she is trying to cover up the biggest tragedy in Maine history and then place the burden on the backs of the survivors who will pay for the services needed to train thousands of immigrants. How long will that last?
Right now the average age of a worker in Maine is 48 years old. Why not follow Colgan’s advice and bring in 3,000 a year? I think we know why. Revenge against white conservatives.
