In 2023 the Maine Legislature passed L.D. 1619, a good bill that protects reproductive autonomy. But as we have seen, laws can be changed. Maine people need a consistent standard for reproductive healthcare, including abortion access. A Constitutional Amendment would provide that standard. That is the purpose of the current resolution that has been proposed by Senator Eloise Vitelli and nine other legislators: L.D. 780, a “Resolution, Proposing an Amendment to the Constitution of Maine to Protect Personal Reproductive Autonomy”.
After the bill moves out of the Judiciary Committee, two-thirds of both legislative houses must vote in favor for it to advance. If these hurdles are achieved, Maine residents will have the opportunity to vote on the resolution.
The arguments on both sides of this issue have been aired in many hours of testimony, legislative work sessions and floor debates. It is now time to let the voters have a direct voice. That is what this resolution is about. If you believe, as I do, that we should let Maine residents determine whether there will be constitutional protection for people to make their own reproductive decisions, contact your state legislators in support of this amendment.
Those who represent us need to know that this is not about voting by personal or religious beliefs but about using the democratic process, hearing from the voters and laying this issue to rest once and for all. Urge your senators and representatives to pass L.D. 780 to let the voters decide.
