The Lincoln County Historical Association is set to present the next event in its Winter Lecture Series, “The Help from Hampton: In Service at the Pownalborough Court House 1872-1892,” at 5:30 p.m. Feb 27.
The online talk will be given by James Tanzer, special collections research services librarian at Bowdoin College and

the association’s vice president.
From 1872-92 an aging Sallie and Captain Sam Goodwin, owners of the Pownalborough Court House in Dresden, relied heavily on the housekeeping and farm labor of four young Black workers from Hampton, Virginia: Katy Brown, Randall O. Johnson, Martha Jones, and her brother Joseph Henry Jones, according to a news release from the association.
Through an examination of letters, Tanzer will piece together the stories of these people, illuminating their lives both in Maine and in Virginia during the Reconstruction era and beyond.
A $5 suggested donation helps the association cover costs; donations are appreciated, but not required.
