NEW SHARON — A driver was killed and a passenger critically injured late Monday morning when the vehicle they were in was struck by a pickup truck on Route 2 near Tuttle Auto Sales, according to state police.
The names of the deceased and the passenger were not immediately released.
Maine Public Safety Department spokesperson Shannon Moss said the initial investigation indicated the driver of a 2007 Ford Focus was pulling out of Tuttle’s Auto Sales to turn left to head east onto Route 2 when Shawn Dunning, 64, of Jackman driving a 2022 Dodge Ram was unable to avoid the collision.
The driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene, she said, and a passenger was transported via LifeFlight with critical injuries to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Dunning was not injured, Moss said.
State and local police and fire crews responded to the scene on Farmington Falls Road, which is also Route 2. Moss said the accident happened at 11:45 a.m.
Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols said the road was reopened about 2 p.m.
Nichols said state police, NorthStar Ambulance and fire departments from New Sharon, Chesterville and Farmington assisted at the scene.
