He grew up and attended schools in Skowhegan. He dropped out of school at the age of 15 when his dad died suddenly so that he could help his mom financially. After being honorably discharged in 1955, Bill and Lorraine made their home in Skowhegan, and he began his career as a meat cutter in local stores, while he and Lorraine raised five children.
Bill was a self-taught musician, playing the banjo, ukulele, and the guitar. He loved sing-alongs at neighborhood barbeques, around campfires while camping with his family, or simply playing a quick song in the living room.
