SMITHFIELD — A garage in Smithfield was destroyed by fire Wednesday evening, officials said.
Firefighters responded to 1026 East Pond Road at about 5:30 p.m., and had the flames extinguished in 20 to 30 minutes, Chief Louis Batista of the Smithfield Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department said.
Items stored inside the building were also destroyed, Batista said. The owner was using the garage for storage and as a workspace.
The home on the property was not damaged, Batista said.
The fire’s cause was not known, but it appeared to have been accidental, according to Batista.
The owner of the property told firefighters he did not know the cause of the fire, but noted the garage was old, Batista said.
The Smithfield Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department was assisted by firefighters from Belgrade, Madison, New Sharon, Norridgewock, Oakland, Rome, Sidney and Skowhegan, the chief said, adding that the quick response helped contain the fire to the garage.
“We wanted to make sure we had enough there in case it got away from us,” Batista said.
