It was disappointing that wearing a helmet wasn’t a higher priority of the motorcycle safety campaign (“Survivors recount their struggles to overcome brain injuries after motorcycle crashes,” May 5). In the Lemm accident featured in the article, the car had drifted over the centerline. No amount of “sharing the road” knowledge would have prevented that tragedy. But helmets might have prevented the fatality and would certainly have lessened the brain injury.

The article said helmets don’t prevent brain injury (though NHTSA disagrees), but I think we can agree that a minor concussion that heals in a few weeks is much preferred to a traumatic injury that creates several seizures a day for years on end. Poor driving is a problem that needs to be remedied regardless if motorcycles are on the road. I doubt accidents will stop happening. But there is one thing motorcyclists can do right away for their safety and that’s wear a helmet.
