Judith Cobb Mallett

LEE – The family of Judy Mallett of Lee, Maine and Zephyrhills, Fla. sadly announce her passing from this life on May 7, 2024 with her daughters by her side.

Judy was born to Floyd and Maudie Cobb on May 29, 1946. She was 12 years old when her parents purchased a set of sporting camps on Pierce Pond in western Maine where she spent her summers during her school years.

She graduated from Lee Academy in 1964, and Gorham State Teacher’s College in 1968. Her career began in the Millinocket school system before moving on to the districts of Mt Abram and Carrabec. Wherever she taught, she brought their music programs to new heights while making certain each student had their opportunity to shine. When she joined the Carrabec school system she increased the chorus group from 12 to well over 150. The annual spring concerts, dinner theatre shows, and the annual sellout MDI Event of the Year were examples of her dedication to introduce the arts to young impressionable minds. As part of the annual Event of the Year, Judy had each student literally get a running start and “leap” with arms to the sky into the big spotlight to the song “The Final Countdown”. It was their moment in the spotlight to cherish forever.

Upon her retirement, she and her longtime partner, Jack Bailey, spent their winters in Zephyrhills. It took little time before her talent was recruited by fellow musicians where they lived. Her undisputed musical talents once again attributed to the band’s success where they performed locally.

Two other major passions in her life were researching her family history and support of her own high school, Lee Academy, where she served as a Trustee. She was able to spend quality time with her mother discovering the depths of genealogy for her family and others. She then reconnected with her high school to pour her energies into building a strong Alumni presence, raising money for the needs of the school and creating a sense of community in the process.

She is survived by her two daughters, Katherine and partner John, Kristen and husband Bob; grandchildren Kaitlyn, Nickolas and Grace; great grandchildren Wyatt and Bryce; sister Jeannie Merchant and husband John, sister-in-law Betty Cobb, father of Judy’s girls Robert Mallett; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother Gary, and her longtime loving partner Jack.

In the days of Judy’s “Final Countdown” her girls recorded the “leap song” on her playlist and she relaxed with her eyes closed and tapped her fingers to the beat on her chest in honor of all her students and the special moment she gave them to shine in the spotlight.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
