I have followed politics and the state of our beloved Maine for many years, but it was only recently that I have begun to actively engage in our political process. In 2023, I caught wind of a bill being proposed by our governor that I found deeply disturbing on moral and ethical grounds. No longer could I sit on the sidelines and hope someone else would fight that battle. A representative form of government only works if citizens communicate with their elected officials. It was time to get out of my comfort zone and find my voice.

I remember the first time I drove to our State House to attend public hearings. It was intimidating, but I steadied myself by remembering why I was there testifying. Show support for bills I felt were good for Mainers, and opposition for bills I felt were detrimental for Mainers. It was also enlightening, as I observed fellow citizens and our elected officials conduct their business in public hearings. That invisible wall between my government and my life disappeared when I showed up in the People’s House.

As I drove home that day, my heart was filled with deep gratitude to live in a nation that allows us to participate in this process and I knew I would be back, next time with friends. My hope is to inspire others to get involved and find their voice. Our future depends on us!
