Max Cheng, a senior at Winthrop High School, has been selected as a National Merit Scholarship recipient.

Each year, about 1.5 million juniors take the PSAT. From this pool, the 15,000 highest scorers advance as finalists, with 2,500 ultimately being awarded the National Merit Scholarship.

Selection of the scholars from the finalist pool was conducted by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who assessed academic records, standardized test scores, contributions to school and community activities, essays, and letters of recommendation.

During the selection process, Cheng’s combination of academic and extracurricular achievement stood out. While at Winthrop, he was involved in a variety of co-curricular activities, including the Student Leadership Team, Math Team, and National Honor Society. Additionally, Cheng founded the Rambler Tutoring and R.I.S.K programs.

As an athlete, Cheng competed on the varsity lacrosse team and served as a captain of the varsity soccer team.

Valedictorian of his class, Cheng was chosen as a recipient of the Maine Seal of Biliteracy in French.

Cheng plans to attend the University of Oklahoma in the fall, to study aerospace engineering.
