Herbert Carl Kontio
FARMINGDALE – Herbert Carl Kontio, 77, of Farmingdale, died peacefully with his loved ones by his side at home on the morning of Wednesday, April 24, 2024.
Born in Rockland on May 11, 1946, the son of Henry and Mary (Ranta) Kontio. Herb grew up on a blueberry farm. As a boy he developed lifelong interests in fishing, rock collecting, and gardening. He graduated from Rockport High School.
Herb met the love of his life, Janet, at the University of Maine, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Upon graduation he was a recipient of a full scholarship to the University of Delaware for a master’s degree leading to a PHD. Shortly after, he was drafted and proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years, following a family tradition. He spent his professional career working for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs at Togus for 35 years.
He and Janet welcomed three daughters. He had so many qualities that made him uniquely suited to family life. He shined as a father. He told his family members “I love you” every day. He was unwaveringly reliable, kind, patient, respectful, and hard working. He put others first, and it seemed effortless for him.
He had a fantastic sense of humor and he was silly. At times he would laugh so hard he would tear up. He gave the gift of a wonderful sense of humor to his loved ones.
He was an exceptional home chef. His family always looked forward to his home cooking and everyone had a favorite dish to request. He always ate very slowly and was the last one to finish a meal. He savored every bite.
Herb was active throughout his life. In his younger years he loved skiing and in his senior years he became an avid golfer. He loved to travel and look at maps to plan routes. All of his loved ones can remember a special trip with him, whether it be going to an amusement park with a grandchild or taking a trip to Canada with Janet to mark a wedding anniversary, you could be sure he was having fun.
In retirement Herb and Janet spent winters in Green Valley, Ariz. They continued to travel to spend time with family and go on new adventures. Herb enjoyed his life fully.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his two older brothers.
Herb is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet; their three daughters, Noelle, Sarah, and Marykate, their husbands; and seven grandchildren.
A private graveside service with full military honors will be held at the Rockville Cemetery, Rockport. Arrangements and guidance are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
