BANGOR – Howard “Howie” Lee Soule, PhD, of Bangor, passed away on May 14, 2024, at the age of 77.
Howie was a direct descendant of George Soule, who traveled to Plymouth on the Mayflower in 1620. Howie had many interests and pursued each one with great dedication until he achieved proficiency. He rebuilt numerous boats of his own and worked with the Belfast Boat Yard. He was an experienced sailor, airplane pilot, and photographer. He was a talented musician, playing 6 and 12 string guitar, and piano. As president and CEO of Bangor’s Shaw House development, he oversaw the old Bangor Waterworks renovation into low income housing. He was a founder and past president of the Pine State Amateur Radio Club and spent many years with the Navy MARS program, which allowed sailors around the world to exchange rapid messages with their families back home.
Howie was most widely known as a broadcaster. His career spanned over 60 years, beginning as a disc jockey at WTVL in Waterville when still a teenager, and finishing as a “Good Guy” at WGUY in Bangor. In between, he spent over 30 years as Chief Engineer at Z62 WZON and WKIT. His experience, wisdom, and often hands-on help were given to nearly every radio and television station in Maine. He put many of them on the air for the first time. He put even more of them back on the air after being called upon to solve problems that stumped others. This led him to help other stations beyond Maine, New England, and other parts of the world. He also helped develop a medical imaging device using RF technology.
Howie is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Hawkes Soule, and her children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his son, Andrew Howard Soule of Winterport and his partner Cheri; grandsons Daniel Andrew Soule of Winterport and Robert Edwin Soule of Stockton, Ill. and his partner Erin. He is also survived by his daughter, Angela and her partner Bill Rogers of Winterport; nephew, David Libby and niece, Elizabeth Libby. Howie was predeceased by his parents, Clyde Arthur Soule and Loretta Charlotte Soule (Carey) of Oakland; brother, Stephen and sister, Patricia.
Friends and associates are invited to join us for a celebration of life, at 10 a.m., June 12, 2024 at the Bangor Elks Club, 108 Odlin Road. Come enjoy and share memories of a remarkable man.
