Alice Burke (Talbot) Brooks
SACO – Alice Burke (Talbot) Brooks, 93, died in Saco on June 27, 2024, after a life filled with love, humor, and joy. She grew up in Gardiner, the New Year’s baby of Anne and Edward Talbot, sharing a happy childhood with her younger brother, Sam.
After graduating from Farmington State Teachers College (now UMF) in 1952, Alice taught 1st Grade in Bath, where she met her future husband, Waldo “Bud” Brooks, with whom she raised three children, mostly in Hallowell, while enjoying a fulfilling teaching career. She retired with Bud to Forest City, Maine, and wintered in Spring Hill, Fla. Alice cherished her family and friends, and was in turn cherished by them. She was an avid reader and enjoyed participating in local book groups wherever she lived. Alice’s grandchildren always received the latest Newbery Medal-winning books from her, which became treasured reads.
She will be dearly remembered as a woman of profound faith who never met a stranger, never forgot a birthday, and liked nothing better than a good laugh at her own expense.
She was predeceased by her husband; parents; and brother.
Alice is survived by son, Mark Brooks and wife Catherine Wood Brooks, daughter, Carol Brooks Ball and husband John Hart, and daughter, Jane Maynard and husband Tom; grandchildren Lynnsay Applbaum and husband David, Brendan Ball, and Caroline Ball and fiancé Matthew Donaghey; sister-in-law, Joan Cummings; and many nieces and nephews (and their families) with whom she shared countless joyful memories.
Alice’s family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Seal Rock Healthcare at Atlantic Heights who helped Alice recover from a broken hip in March, 2023, and to Beacon Hospice, who provided compassionate comfort during her final days.
There will be a funeral Mass in remembrance on Friday, July 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 132 McKeen St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
