LINCOLNVILLE — University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Tanglewood is accepting scholarship applications for youth in grades six to eight to attend overnight summer camp for a week or a weeklong Appalachian Trail trip.

Session dates are July 21-26 or July 28-Aug. 2. In addition to a full scholarship to camp, this Maine Department of Education-funded grant also reimburses families for mileage to and from camp.

During the overnight summer camp session, participants will hike in Camden Hills State Park, canoe, spend time on the archery range, meet with Maine guides and climate scientists and explore the seashore. Campers have free choice electives in the afternoon and recreation time each day. Evenings feature traditional activities such as capture the flag, scavenger hunts and campfires.

Youth who attend the Appalachian Trail trip will spend four days along Maine’s section of the hiking trail, learning about lightweight backpacking and the Leave No Trace philosophy. The experience includes personal and group challenges. Participants can learn what it means to carry everything needed to eat, sleep and hike for multiple days and meet AT through-hikers on their way to Katahdin or Georgia.

At Tanglewood, youth engage in hands-on learning experiences while exploring the local woods and waterways. Camping staff use music, visual arts, ecology and STEM activities to help youth make connections to Maine’s long heritage of outdoor recreation. The camp emphasizes community living, respect for all and healthy relationships, encouraging youth to be themselves, learn from those around them, and make good decisions.
