AUGUSTA — A city man who is a suspect in connection with a death in Cushing was arrested late Tuesday after barricading himself in his car in a parking lot off Route 3 and setting off a four-hour police standoff.
Jason Hewett, 39, of Augusta, is charged with eluding an officer, domestic assault and manslaughter, Maine State Police public information officer Shannon Moss said in a news release Wednesday morning.

Jason Hewett, 39, of Augusta.
Moss said Hewett is a suspect in the investigation of the death of an adult person, whom authorities have not yet officially identified. The Courier-Gazette on Monday, citing court records, identified the victim as Kyle MacDougall, 45.
State police detectives and evidence response technicians investigated the death at 834 River Road in Cushing Friday and Saturday. Mark D. Gagne, 41, of 834 River Road in Cushing, was identified in court records as a suspected accomplice in connection with MacDougall’s death.
Tuesday, around 2 p.m., state police became involved in a pursuit of a vehicle driven by Hewett on Route 32 in Windsor, according to Moss. The pursuit traveled north on Route 32 toward China, then onto Route 3 toward Augusta where, police said in an effort to avoid smoke mats placed on Route 3 in Augusta, Hewett drove into a ditch and onto the lawn of Nadeau Chiropractic and Wellness Center.
Hewett then barricaded himself inside his vehicle. The Maine State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded. After four hours of negotiations Hewett surrendered and was arrested without incident. He was taken to Kennebec County jail.
Moss said the deceased person in the Cushing death will be identified once the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner can make a positive identification and next of kin is notified.
Hewett is the second person arrested on charges tied to the Cushing death. On Friday, Gagne was arrested on charges of abuse of a corpse and hindering apprehension in the case. He was taken to the Knox County jail.
The standoff with Hewett in Augusta shut down the heavily traveled Route 3 in Augusta for more than four hours.
Shortly before 8 p.m., Tuesday, the Augusta Police Department posted on its Facebook page that Route 2, which is also U.S. Route 202 and North Belfast Avenue, had been reopened to traffic following the arrest of a suspect that had been sought by police.
Augusta Police Chief Kevin Lully said his agency supplied traffic control at the situation that apparently started as a State Police call outside of the city and a pursuit that ended on Route 3, not far from the Vassalboro line.
Businesses in the area were reportedly closed.
Shortly before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Augusta Police issued a public safety alert, notifying the public that Route 3 was closed between Churchill and Bolton Hill roads and urged drivers to seek alternate routes. The alert said there was no danger to the public.
At 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Augusta police said via a social media post that Route 3 remained closed.

“There is currently no danger to the public,” the post said. “The suspect involved in this ongoing incident is contained to a business in the closed section of the road. The business was evacuated earlier this afternoon and all occupants are safe.”
Assisting the Maine State Police was the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. Further details about the incident remains under investigation.
