AUGUSTA — The team that had been the best all tournament long continued to be so on its final day — and for the second time in five days took down the host, this one a season-ender.
The Capital Area Babe Ruth League 13-16 team’s season came to an end Tuesday with a 9-0 loss to Norwalk, Connecticut, in the New England regional semifinals. The result sent Norwalk to Tuesday night’s regional championship game against Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which it would defeat 2-0 to claim the title.
“It didn’t go our way today, but these kids have nothing to hang their heads about,” said Capital Area head coach Greg Lajoie. “This New England regional is no joke, and they finished in the top four two years in a row with back-to-back state championships. It’s hard because they’re all competitors, but I’m proud of them.”

Starting pitcher Frank Bergin tossed a gem for Norwalk, striking out eight and walking just one in 5 2/3 innings of work. The Connecticut state champs scored four runs in the first inning before adding one in the fifth and four more in the fifth as part of a nine-hit performance.
Dylan Izzi led the way with three hits for undefeated Norwalk, which also got a solo home run from Michael Marini to spearhead its big sixth inning. Parker Morin and Carter Ulmer had singles for Capital Area, for which Finn Vinci (four innings pitched, three earned runs) took the loss.
Capital Area had to bounce back from losses to Norwalk and Pittsfield in its first two games just to reach the semis. The Augusta-based team did so with wins Sunday against Lyndon, Vermont, and Monday against Maine runner-up Greater Sanford, which it had previously beaten for the state title.
As for Norwalk, the Connecticut juggernauts finished the tournament 5-0, outscoring goes by an impressive 32-2 margin. Capital Area had previously been no-hit by Izzi in its tournament opener, a 7-0 Norwalk victory.
“Like I said, this New England region is for real, and it’s something we’re proud to be a part of,” Lajoie said. “That Connecticut team, they just do everything right. It’s two years in a row that they’ve played (Pittsfield) in the finals. Both of them are well-coached, and you’ve got to root for both of them.”
The New England title sends Norwalk to the Babe Ruth World Series, which is to be held Aug. 8-17 in Branson, Missouri. It’s the fourth straight regional championship for Norwalk’s current age group.
