Lake George is a pristine gem in central Maine. It is one of Canaan’s primary assets and an asset to the surrounding area. The park’s existence means that local people have a place to go on a hot day, for an evening drive to watch the sunset, to go fishing, or to use the trails for walking or cross country skiing.

The present Lake George Regional Park owes its existence primarily to three Canaan residents: Louise Townsend, Bill Townsend and Patrick McGowan. Louise Townsend and a few supporters persisted in pursuing the acquisition of Camp Modin to be used as a park for all people in central Maine. The park was meant to be affordable for all. Please see the original mission statement on the LGRP webpage.

In the past six years, day fees at the park have increased to $8 for all 12 and older. Under 5 and over 65 are free and 5-11 is $4. This makes it one of the most expensive public parks in the state. Why?

Information from the park is sparse. There is talk of a gate on the east side. Gates are barriers, physically and metaphorically. Why a gate? Who is afraid and why? Who needs to be kept out?

The park needs to be accessible to all, but my primary concern is for children. Children need to be outside being active. We now offer season family passes via Canaan Elementary School and Canaan Farmers Hall. Any Canaan resident can apply prior to April 1 to be included in a bulk rate. The sliding fee is from $0-$60. This is a way to support the park and local families.

Cheers to Louise Townsend! Thank you for our park!
