WATERVILLE — Police are investigating a case involving two pedestrians who were struck by a Jeep and injured Sunday when they were trying to cross Elm Street.
One of the pedestrians, a woman, was seriously injured and was taken by LifeFlight of Maine to Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to Waterville police Maj. Jason Longley. The male pedestrian, who received minor injuries, was treated at the scene and released, he said.
Peter Michaud, 70, was operating the Jeep Patriot south on Elm Street, near Park Street, at 10:38 a.m. Sunday, when the pair was trying to cross Elm Street from First Church of Waterville, Longley said. The church, located at the corner of Elm and Park streets, formerly was called First Baptist Church.
“The male operator of the vehicle attempted to go around a vehicle stopped in traffic and struck the two pedestrians as they were crossing in the crosswalk,” Longley said.
He said Michaud, for whom he did not give a town of residence, was not injured and the Jeep, which had minor damage, was towed from the scene.
Longley did not identify the victims, saying he was unable to release further information because the case is under investigation.
However, a relative of the injured woman identified her as Sarah Pickell, a receptionist at Waterville Senior High School, and the male pedestrian who was struck as Pickell’s son, Anthony.
The relative said the Pickells were leaving the church when they were struck.
Contacted at the hospital late Monday afternoon, Pickell’s relatives said “she is in intensive care and stable.”
