Five of the teachers pictured at the 1958 dedication of a school addition taught at the Jefferson Village School for many years from 1935 into the 1960’s. From left are Mrs. Nancy Jones, Mrs. Laura Pierce, Mrs. Edna Parlin, Mrs. Alice Holmes, Mrs. Lillian Choate and Mrs. Helen Madden. Parlin began her teaching career in Jefferson as a young teacher at the one-room Trask School and later, at the Murphy School. It is quite a remarkable story. This photo is one of more than 30 old photos featured in the 2025 edition of the Jefferson Historical Society’s 2025 calendar. Photos of several student classes and teachers; the old JVS being built in 1912 which stood for many years; glimpses of homes, people and businesses tell pieces of Jefferson’s history. The calendar also has business cards of the Jefferson businesses supporting the calendar project as well as important telephone numbers and open hours of the town office, post office, transfer station and more. The calendars cost $10 are available at all JHS Open Houses from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, and 3-5 p.m. Aug. 18 and Sept. 8, at the Jefferson Market and at Staab Trailer Registrations and Titling or by calling 207-549-5258.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
