A Margaret Chase Smith Appreciation Day is set for 4-6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at the Margaret Chase Smith Library, 56 Norridgewock Ave. in Skowhegan.

The celebration is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

Staff remarks will be given at 4:45 p.m., followed by a gallery talk given by exhibiting Maine artist Jerri Whitman.

This event is an opportunity to enjoy two temporary exhibitions on display at the library. The first, “Painting an Inclusive History: Maine Women in Politics,” is a portrait exhibition which features the work of Whitman, who is working to create a portrait of every woman from Maine who has been elected to the Maine Legislature, the U.S. House of Representatives, or the U.S. Senate.

The second is a student exhibition, “Joshua Chamberlain’s Victory at Gettysburg: July 1-3, 1863,” created by Sylvie Jensen of Penobscot Christian School. Jensen competed in the 2024 National History Day in Maine competition and received the Margaret Chase Smith Maine Exhibition Award.

The library is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and reservations are encouraged. To make a reservation, call the library at (207) 474-7133.
