Maine’s emerging offshore wind industry represents a crucial economic and environmental opportunity. Maine stands at a pivotal moment in our fight against destructive climate change. We now experience “hundred-year storms” on a regular basis, bringing catastrophic flooding and infrastructure damage. The Gulf of Maine is warming faster than nearly any other part of the ocean, with disastrous consequences for fishing and lobster industries. We can’t wait any longer to make a historic investment in clean energy and offshore wind presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Mainers to do this.
Our coast’s high wind speeds and deep-water access make Maine an ideal candidate for a major offshore wind investment. In fact, the federal grant that will help pay for construction of an offshore wind port totals nearly half a billion dollars- the largest federal investment in our state ever! This is an incredible opportunity and demonstrates the importance of Maine’s energy contributions to national energy and climate targets.
Maine’s proud historic connection to maritime jobs continues with the development of floating offshore wind technology. This is our chance as a state to secure a significant economic contributor and enough clean energy to help Maine meet its energy needs and climate goals. By investing in renewable energy and offshore wind now, we will have the chance to lead its implementation all over the east coast. The steady stream of revenue and supply of high-quality Maine manufacturing jobs will help power Maine’s economy and energy sectors for generations to come.
Offshore wind is the best way for Maine to combat destructive climate change while simultaneously promoting economic growth and Maine jobs. Let’s work together to protect the future of Maine people and our environment by taking this generational opportunity to develop offshore wind.
