SKOWHEGAN – Genie Avis (Lane Smith) Vashon was born March 22, 1927, in Abbot Village, Maine to the late Olin Eugene Lane and Ruth (Crockett) Lane. She passed away at her home on May 10, 2024, at the age of 97, surrounded by her loving family.
Genie, known for her caring nature and strong spirit, dedicated her life to serving others. She pursued her passion for nursing by graduating from the Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 after attending a one-room elementary school in Embden and Solon High School. She was the Director of Nurses, provided home health care, and helped deliver babies in the local area. Genie passed her love of nursing to her son, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
After retirement, Genie and Alfred found joy “ramming the road” in northern Maine in search of wildlife. Together they created lasting memories, albums of wildlife photos, and a collection of antlers.
Genie leaves behind three sons, Ronald, Randall, and Robert; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a loving extended family. She was predeceased by her first husband and father of her four sons, Howard Smith, her second husband and love of her life, Alfred Vashon; her eldest son Richard Smith; and her two brothers Kenneth “Zeke” and Vernon Lane.
The family wants to thank Randall for being her primary caregiver and her whole family for supporting her desire to be at home.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
