MERCER – Shirley Agnes Chapman Lagasse, 92, passed away peacefully Friday Aug. 9, 2024 at her home in Mercer. Shirley was born in Mercer on Sept. 7, 1931, to Frank and Florence Chapman.
On June 9, 1951, Shirley married the love of her life, Linwood Lagasse. Together they built a life and a home in Skowhegan, raising two children. She loved spending time and being a “Grammie” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Shirley took much pride in her work as a stitcher, first at Norrwock Shoe and then at New Balance where she retired in 1996.
Shirley lived a life full of love and dedication to her family. She had a deep passion for gardening, where she found joy in nurturing her flowers and vegetables. She was also a master in the kitchen, where she spent countless hours canning the fruits of her labor, cooking hearty meals, and baking treats. Easter dumplings and graham cracker pie became family traditions. Shirley was never idle. When she wasn’t gardening or cooking, she could be found serving as a “carpenter’s helper” to Linwood, assisting him with all their various projects. In recent years, she found joy in sitting outside, soaking in the sun and going for rides in the car. She loved a hot cup of coffee with a whoopie pie treat.
Shirley was a gentle soul, always striving to keep peace and harmony in her family. But she was also known for her quick wit, often surprising others with her sharp and humorous remarks. Her ability to bring a smile to someone’s face was one of her many gifts.
She is survived by her children Adina Partridge of Madison and Irwin Lagasse of Mercer; grandchildren Marsha Toth (Kirk) of Oakland, Chad Partridge (Janice) of Oakland, Jackie McDonough (Patrick) of Gardiner; great-grandchildren Alexis, Mikayla, Leah, Hallie, Colston and Jensen; great great grandchildren Briana and Josh.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Linwood Lagasse; parents, Frank and Florence Chapman; siblings Lloyd, Marie, Waren and William; as well as son-in-law Barry Partridge.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Calvary Cemetery, North Ave., Skowhegan.
Many thanks to all the special caregivers who gave her such great care, compassion and comfort over the last years of her life.
Arrangements are in the care of Veilleux-Redington-Lawry Brothers, 8 Elm Street, Waterville where memories of Shirley may be shared and an online register book can be signed by visiting www.vrlfuneralhome.com.
