Harold Thomas Sawyer
BRUNSWICK – Harold Thomas Sawyer passed away on July 27, 2024, at his home in Brunswick, at the age of 88. Tom was born on June 4, 1936, in Malden, Mass. to Harold L. Sawyer and Margaret M. Sawyer.
Tom graduated Belgrade High School prior to his enlistment. Tom had a highly decorated career soldier in the U.S. Army. He was trained as a Mechanic and Heavy Equipment Operator and served in the Vietnam War. Over his 26-year career, Tom rose through the ranks to the highest possible enlisted rank of Sergeant Major, serving his last post as Staff Sergeant Major in the 1st Army Readiness Group. Among his many awards, Sergeant Sawyer was awarded two Army Commendation medals, The Bronze Star and the Republic of Vietnam Award for Valor. Upon his retirement, he was awarded the Legion of Merit for his dedicated and exemplary career.
Upon retirement, Tom and his wife of 47 years, Ruby, settled in Bridgeton, and later moved to Brunswick. After Ruby passed, Tom married Helen Michaud.
Tom was predeceased by both Ruby and Helen.
Tom is survived by his son, Fred T. Spares of Limington, daughter Naomi R. Vitti of Georgetown, Texas; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held on August 23 at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road in Augusta. A Celebration of Life will be held at Tom’s residence in Brunswick after the service.
