LEWISTON — An Auburn man committed suicide after creating a police standoff on Essex Street Saturday night into early Sunday morning, according to a Lewiston Police Department press release.
Police said Nathan Savage, 45, of Auburn died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 3:30 a.m. after creating a standoff with local, area and state police.
Lewiston police Lt. Derrick St. Laurent said his department received several calls around 11:30 p.m. about a man with a gun on Essex Street. He said witnesses reported the man was actively firing the weapon.
The first officers to the scene quickly located Savage, who began firing at them before fleeing into the woods, St. Laurent said.
Officers did not return fire, he said.
Auburn and Lisbon police departments, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies and Maine State Police responded to assist Lewiston police in creating a perimeter. The Maine State Police Tactical Team and crisis negotiators assisted with the search.
Police located Savage in the woods, deceased, with a handgun, St. Laurent said.
No one else was injured in the incident, he said.
Savage’s body was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
