Glenys Mae (McFarland) Mitchell

ROANOKE, Va. – Glenys Mae (McFarland) Mitchell of Maine and Roanoke, Va. passed away on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, at the age of 84, after a tough battle with illness.

She was born in 1940 and raised in Maine. She grew up primarily in the town of Damariscotta, where she had many happy memories. She loved her time spent at her family’s camp on McCurdy Pond. She attended Lincoln Academy for two years before her family moved to Benton, and she graduated from Lawrence High School in 1958.

She married David Mitchell in 1958, and they were together until his passing in 2015. They had two children, Tammy and Glen, and lived in the towns of Rome and Benton. Glenys and David moved to Virginia in 2012 to be closer to her children and her granddaughter, Hannah. She lived in Sylva, N.C. before returning to Roanoke, Va.

Glenys was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Velma McFarland; stepfather, Merrill Caler; and husband, David Mitchell.

She is survived by her daughter, Tammy Roach and husband Troy of Sylva, N.C., her son, Glen Mitchell and his wife Susanna of Bent Mountain, Va.; her beloved granddaughter, Hannah and her fiancé Wesley of Mountainair, N.M.; and brother-in-law, Joseph Mitchell of Unity.

Glenys was a friendly and fun-loving person who cherished spending time with her family and friends. She loved all animals, especially dogs, and could not pass one without petting it. She was an enthusiastic traveler and was always eager to see new places. Her passions included knitting, bird watching, camping, and music. She had a quick sense of humor and enjoyed conversations while sitting around a campfire, or, better yet, a big lobster (lobstah!) dinner.

At Mom’s request, there will be no service. Condolences may be shared with her family by visiting http://www.Oakeys.com.

Arrangements by Oakey’s Funeral Service, South Chapel, Roanoke, Va. 540-989-3131.
