Dorothy Forbes (Marson) Damon
HALLOWELL – Dorothy Forbes Marson Damon, 98, of Hallowell, passed away at Woodlands Senior Living on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024.
Dot or “Aunt Dot” (as she was known to so many) was born in Augusta on April 17, 1926, to Berton and Harriet Marson, the fourth of seven children.
As a child, Dot attended Williams Elementary School, Farrington Elementary School, and Pittston School. While still a little girl, Dot met her very best and lifelong friend, Pauline Henderson Mansir. Following attendance at Cony High School, Dot attended Gates Business College for two years.
On Nov. 28, 1959, Dot married John Damon of Whitefield at the Randolph Methodist Church, with Beverly Tyler serving as the maid of honor and Ellie Damon as the best man. During her life, Dot resided in Chelsea, Augusta, Pittston, Randolph, and Hallowell, as well as in Ashaway and Westerly, R.I. Over the years, Dot worked as a cashier at McClellan’s Department Store for 19 years, McQuade’s Supermarket for two, Laverdiere’s Drug Stores for five, Reny’s Department Store for three, and the Lucky Strike Lanes for eight.
Dot was an avid bowler on the Tuesday night and Friday night leagues at the Lucky Strike Lanes and participated in many tournaments. Dot volunteered at Cox Memorial Methodist Church chicken pie suppers for many years and was a greeter and usher on many Sundays. Dot was active with the Cohen Senior Center knitting group. She also started the knitting club at the Cotton Mill Apartments, which donated all baby hats, sweaters, mittens, scarves, and more to the needy in the community and around the state. Dot was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and supported the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Dot was known for her cooking, and nobody who went to her house ever went away hungry. She was an avid reader as well and particularly enjoyed the novels of Danielle Steele. Dot wanted everyone to know that “I have many friends I didn’t realize I had, I never met anybody yet I didn’t like, and I love family gatherings.”
She is survived by a son, Glenn Damon and his wife Lynn; three daughters, Carolyn Garofalo, Rita Ray and her partner Greg, and Audrey Vasilas and her husband James; a foster son, G. Donald Marson; a sister, Evelyn Gaboury of Augusta; and many, many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; grandnieces, grandnephews; friends; and her very special Friday.
