HALLOWELL — The Maine Tourism Association has launched its Travel Counselor Certification Program, an initiative designed to elevate the visitor experience across Maine.
This May, MTA introduced the state’s first certification program, endorsed by the U.S. Travel Association, and the first cohort of Maine State Visitor Information Center staff have earned their Certified Maine Travel Counselor designations.
Among the inaugural honorees are Travel Counselors Kathryn Hamlyn and Tim Charboneau, along with Center Manager & Regional Partnership Manager Eva Johnson from the Maine Visitor Information Center in Fryeburg, and Beth Whitney from the Center in Yarmouth.
The program requires passing a 100-question exam that covers a broad spectrum of topics, including Maine’s geography, history, culture and customer service excellence.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
