I just read your fine front-page article on Jared Golden’s reelection campaign (Aug. 17). He is listed as a Democrat but voted against Biden’s policies more than 50% of the time.
Your article lays out the situation that if he does not get reelected, it may tip the election to the Trump side, which I find unbelievably dangerous to retaining democracy and a livable climate. So, I must vote for Golden in spite of my objection to his apparent climate denial and insistence on “drill-baby-drill” for the oil industry.
On a second issue in that article, the winner-takes-all system in most states, defies the one-man-one-vote tradition. A 51-49% vote in a state turns the will of 49% of the voters into votes for what they considered the opposition at the Electoral College. That unfair shift of the votes of the 49% can easily distort the will of the people and the future of the country. That and the system of uber-rich people and giant corporations dumping massive quantities of money into elections to buy favorable laws, must be ended.
Government was meant to protect and benefit all, not just the rich.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
