BANGOR – Dwight Winston Ellis, 86, of Bangor passed away Tuesday Sept. 3, 2024. Dwight was born in Bangor on July 23, 1938, to the late John Ellis and Alverna Reynolds. He graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1956 and went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Farmington State Teachers College (class of 1961) where he met the love of his life, Judy Ann Seymour. The two married in 1960 and soon welcomed three wonderful children. Dwight later earned his master’s degree in teaching from Colgate University in 1969 and completed his doctorate at the University of Maine at Orono in 1976. For 31 years, from 1962 until his retirement in 1993, Dwight taught science at Gardiner Junior High School. During his time there, he forged lifelong friendships, often celebrating these bonds at “school socials.” Early in his career he also enjoyed coaching the school’s baseball team.
After retiring, Dwight and Judy relocated to Bangor to support their eldest son, Tom, in his business ventures, Front Row Video and Great Skates. In Bangor, they formed lasting friendships and traveled extensively, both across the country and abroad. Dwight also remained active in the Elks Club, first in Gardiner and later in Bangor.
Dwight was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and academic who cherished time with his family. He loved building models, playing the piano, and getting lost in a good book. His greatest passion, though, was making a meaningful impact in the lives of his students.
Dwight is survived by his wife of 64 years, Judy; sons, Thomas Ellis and Timothy (Kim) Ellis; daughter, Terry (Steven) Robbins; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Darryl (Cheryl) Ellis; sister-in-law, Jan Ellis; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Dwight was predeceased by his brother, Duane Ellis.
A memorial reception will be held from 3-5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor.
