It seems that the years haven’t mellowed the liberal pro-abortion rhetoric of column writer Frank O’Hara (“Why Catholics should vote Democratic in 2024,” Sept. 5); so I’m compelled to answer.
O’Hara’s folksy tone and “compassionate” verbiage regarding the costs of abortion, child care, education, etc., do not quite measure up to his promised outcome: “We can build a better future for our children.” Nicely intoned — but only if these children can first survive being aborted! And that is a big if! Because it has already been proven that in this Democratic-controlled state of Maine, the chance for life becomes less and less with each session of Legislature. Passage of L.D. 1619 and L.D. 227 are indeed proof positive! Abortion of full-term babies is allowed right up until birth.
To a lesser degree, but still worth mentioning, O’Hara invoked Catholic social teachings re: immigrants — i.e. illegal aliens. But approval of open borders in our country is not Catholic teaching. Rather, it is Democratic policy and pure economic insanity!
Therefore, contrary to what Frank is suggesting, struggling Mainers who value family and freedom — Catholics and non-Catholics alike — cannot afford to vote Democrat.
