WATERVILLE — The Lawrence field hockey team had just one penalty corner in the fourth quarter of its Class B North showdown with rival Cony. But the Bulldogs made the most of it.

With 1:33 left in the game, junior Kiera Day tipped a shot from senior Jai Kao into the cage to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 win over the Rams on Thursday night at Bill Alfond Field at Colby College.

“Jai got the ball at the top, and as I was coming over, I could just feel like it was going to be a really good ball,” Day said. “I felt really good about (the tip).”

“We fought, my kids fought,” Lawrence head coach Shawna Robinson said. “I love it. (The halftime message was) stop giving up on the ball, stop giving up on the play. Just basic stuff. Just open up your eyes and see the field.”

Day scored both goals for Lawrence (2-1), which trailed 1-0 at halftime. Kao and Mya Dixon had assists for the Bulldogs.

After a scoreless first quarter, senior Abby Morrill gave the Rams (1-2) a 1-0 lead with 1:39 remaining in the half, making a streak and knocking a shot past Lawrence goaltender Abbey Stewart.

Day scored her first goal with 4:45 remaining in the third quarter. Stewart, who finished with 14 saves, held off a strong Cony attack, which included four penalty corners in the second half.

“(Stewart) had a great night,” Day said. “She had a couple one-on-one (situations), really important plays that she really stepped up on.”

Cony goaltender Courtney Ramage had nine saves.

After falling 3-2 to Leavitt in the season opener on Sept. 5, Lawrence has outscored opponents by a 13-1 margin in its last two games. The Bulldogs beat Morse 11-0 on Sept. 7 in Bath.
