Neighbors Driving Neighbors recently hosted a driver appreciation luncheon at the historic Viles House in Augusta. More than 15 drivers and guests had a buffet of home-cooked soups, salads and sandwiches, and homemade desserts, all provided by the organization’s board members.
Vice President Sandy Colt welcomed everyone to the event and Executive Director Joe Austin thanked all the attendees for their dedication. All drivers were recognized for their contributions and some were highlighted for noteworthy milestones — including Allan Harville as one of the earliest and still active drivers, serving since 2015, and Steve Symonds, who has done 126 trips with 3,628 miles driven since 2022. As a token of appreciation, drivers received gift cards to various establishments in the community, according to a news release from Neighbors Driving Neighbors.
Many drivers expressed similar positive sentiments about why they volunteer and had kind words about the riders they drive. Driver Rob True said, “They (riders) are very appreciative, and are amazed that we volunteer our time, cars and gas. It’s a wonderful service, and you meet really nice people.”
For more information on becoming a volunteer driver, call 207-860-0677. A driver orientation session will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Dr. Shaw Memorial Library at 344 Pond St. in Mount Vernon.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
