MADISON — State police are investigating the death of a woman inmate at Somerset County Jail, according to a Somerset official.
The woman was discovered dead by jail personnel just before 10:30 p.m. Friday, Somerset County Sheriff’s chief Deputy Mike Mitchell said Saturday afternoon.
He said he could not release the name of the woman because her next of kin had not yet been located and notified.
Mitchell, who responded to the jail Friday night after he was notified of the death, said state police are investigating the case, as is protocol, and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner was scheduled to do an autopsy to confirm cause and manner of death.
Mitchell said he could provide no further details.
Emails sent Saturday afternoon to state police spokeswoman Shannon Moss and Lt. Aaron Turcotte, troop commander of Maine State Police Central Field Troop, were not immediately answered.
