RANGELEY – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Berton Haley on, Friday, Sept. 6, 2024 at his home in Rangeley, Maine, at the age of 81. Born in Farmington, Maine on March 3, 1943, George was the son of Berton Haley and Marion (Lovejoy) Haley.
In his younger years, George worked morning and night with his father on his grandfather’s, Orrie Haley, dairy farm in Rangeley.
In winter months, George worked on Saddleback Mountain running the chair lift and other jobs as needed. He also worked on a horse farm in Rangeley, training horses and giving riding lessons.
He attended Rangeley High School and then joined the Navy. He moved to the Augusta area for some years, working for Dick Norton of Norton’s Sunoco Station and later working for Blouin Motors.
George had a passion for cars and had a natural ability for mechanics, being able to do the job quickly and accurately. He enjoyed following NASCAR racing.
Later in life, George returned to his beloved Rangeley, working for DC Morton as a mechanic, and later working for M & H Logging, as a commercial truck driver.
George was avid outdoors man. He loved hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and snowmobiling. He was an excellent gardener and he could make anything grow. His love for animals showed, as he had many dogs and cats in his lifetime. He always taught his animals neat tricks.
George is survived by his sons, Kevin Haley and Trent Haley and his sister, Alice Amber, all of Maine, and his younger brother, Edward Haley and his wife Virginia of New Hampshire, and many cousins.
Rest in peace, from your loving family.
A private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
