Edwena Amsden Nichols

AUGUSTA/BAR HARBOR – Edwena Amsden Nichols, 92, of Augusta and Bar Harbor, made her final transition on Oct. 10, 2024, surrounded by her children and wonderful caregivers.

“Eddy” was born in Fort Fairfield on May 26, 1932. Raised as an only child by her grandparents, she enjoyed the company of a slightly older uncle who felt like a brother to her. In her mid-20s, she married Graydon Sharpe and together they raised three children, Graydon Kerry, Karen, and Timothy. Despite their eventual divorce, they remained friends throughout their lives.

Eddy later married Brigadier General Donald E. Nichols. They lived together happily for 30 years, having many fun adventures together. Eddy’s marriage to “Don” brought with it the added bonus of two new daughters, Donnette Harris and Stephanie Kadnar; and two new granddaughters, Jaimee Farrin (Grant Austin) and Angie Farrin (Tim Dalton). Eddy later welcomed four additional grandchildren, Gabrielle Istvan, Graydon Dobbs, Avery Plaisted (Nick Plaisted), and Maddison Bourassa (Dayton Bourassa); and four great-grandchildren, Natalie, Cooper, Eli, and Ariston. Karen’s husband, Jefferson Dobbs; Stephanie’s husband, Keith Kadnar; and Tim’s partner, Tom Kenney, were also very special people in Eddy’s life.

At the age of 78, Eddy had the privilege to meet her two half-brothers, Wayne Tilley and James Tilley. Although Eddy knew that they were out there, her existence as their sister came as a complete surprise to them.

Eddy worked for many years as a comptroller for Stone and Cooper Oil Co. in Augusta and was awarded Augusta Businesswoman of the year. She was proud of the work and valued the lifelong friendships that grew out of her time there. Eddy was happiest being a mother and grandmother. Her loving devotion to her children and grandchildren brought her and them immense joy. She also gave much of her time to her church and various charitable organizations. While living in Augusta, Eddy and Don were members of the South China Community Church. While living in Bar Harbor, she was a member of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church.

Edwena lived a life full of loving and giving to others. She was a role model for all who had the gift to know her. While our hearts mourn her loss, we take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with all her loved ones who preceded her to the other side.

In addition to family members, Eddy is survived by two very special caregivers, Cas Dowden and Marlene Walker; and her pastor, the Rev. Rob Benson.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330.
