Voters concerned about political extremism should inform themselves of the culture war, MAGA-nonsense bills sponsored by Rep. Katrina Smith of Palermo during her first term in office. The list includes: L.D. 1038 — An act to repeal ranked choice voting; L.D. 835 and L.D. 1434 — two bills introduced to abolish Maine income tax and defund vital social services; L.D. 1557 — An act to permit the concealed carry of handguns on public school property; L.D. 1589 — A resolution directing the state Board of Education to prohibit teachers from introducing “any controversial subject matter,” with penalties up to and including termination of the teacher; L.D. 1249 — An act to outlaw the prescription of abortion-inducing medication by telehealth consultation.
In contrast, Pam Swift has served two terms on the Palermo Town Council, working to find common ground with residents across the political spectrum. Please join me in demanding moderation and civility from our elected officials. Vote for Pam Swift.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
