KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are acquiring three-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans, replenishing a position group that has been ravaged by injuries, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams have not announced the trade.

The Chiefs are sending a conditional fifth-round pick to the Titans, according to NFL Network, while Tennessee is taking on some of Hopkins’ salary. That was an important point for the Chiefs, who have very little salary cap space.

Chiefs Coach Andy Reid declined to acknowledge the trade before practice Wednesday, saying only that General Manager Brett Veach was “dealing with all of that.” When pressed about the trade, Reid said with a slight smile: “I know nothing.”

The Chiefs lost wide receiver Marquise Brown, one of their top free-agent signings, to shoulder surgery prior to the start of the season. Second-year star Rashee Rice sustained a season-ending knee injury last month against the Chargers, and veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is out after hurting his hamstring in last Sunday’s win over the 49ers.

The 32-year-old Hopkins only had 15 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown in his second season in Tennessee. But Hopkins is a proven star – 943 catches for 12,528 yards and 79 TDs over a career spent mostly in Arizona and Houston – and has a versatile skill set that should fit well into Reid’s complex offensive system.

TRADE: The Tennessee Titans are swapping linebackers with Seattle, sending Ernest Jones to the Seahawks for linebacker Jerome Baker, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The deal also includes Seattle sending a fourth-round pick to Tennessee.

JETS: New York quarterback Aaron Rodgers is dealing with a hamstring injury on top of ankle and knee issues but is expected to play Sunday at New England.

Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said Wednesday the 40-year-old Rodgers will be listed as limited for the team’s walkthrough.

Ulbrich also said Haason Reddick’s debut with the Jets could come as soon as Sunday after the star edge rusher ended his lengthy contract holdout when he reported to the team on Monday.

COMMANDERS: Jayden Daniels missed practice Wednesday because of a rib injury, casting further doubt on his availability to play this weekend against Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears in what’s supposed to be a matchup of the top two quarterbacks in the 2024 draft.

Coach Dan Quinn called Daniels “week to week” after the No. 2 pick and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner was injured in a 40-7 rout of Carolina that got the Commanders to 5-2 this season. Daniels took a big hit and went down awkwardly at the end of his first run, left early in the second quarter and was replaced by veteran Marcus Mariota.

BROWNS: Days after quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Coach Kevin Stefanski announced Wednesday that Jameis Winston will start Sunday against Baltimore and that he is handing over play-calling duties to coordinator Ken Dorsey.

The moves – one by necessity, the other by choice – come as the Browns (1-6) try to salvage a season spiraling out of control and as they prepare to host the Baltimore Ravens (5-2) and their No. 1-ranked offense led by quarterback Lamar Jackson.

PANTHERS: Coach Dave Caneles said Bryce Young would start Sunday as Carolina’s quarterback against the Denver Broncos after Andy Dalton was diagnosed with a sprained thumb on his right throwing hand sustained during a car crash on Tuesday in Charlotte.

Dalton did not practice Wednesday and is listed as day to day. There is a chance he could be the No. 2 quarterback this week depending on his recovery.

TEXANS: Linebacker Devin White, who made the Pro Bowl in 2021, signed with Houston on Wednesday.

White signed a one-year contract with the Eagles this offseason but didn’t play before being released earlier this month. He was inactive for the first four games and then ruled out of the fifth game because of personal reasons before his release.
