Thinking about this presidential election, I am reminded of two Maine values: paying attention to the natural world, and honesty.
All of us who garden see the hotter summers, the increase in torrential rain, and changed frost dates. Ice skaters see the thinning of lake ice. Air conditioning is no longer a luxury. When we check for ticks, we are reminded of a time when Lyme disease was only a problem in southern New England. We mourn the passage of Maine shrimp northward as the Gulf of Maine warms. Ocean properties are flooded or washed away.
We can see that Maine’s climate is changing. Meanwhile, Donald Trump tells us there is no climate change. If he gets elected he will block any meaningful attempt to reverse the very real climate change we experience. No matter what your politics or political party, please don’t vote for Donald Trump.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
