AUGUSTA — The seventh annual Sand Buckets and Clear Paths Program aims to support Augusta residents age 60 and older, who have a disability or physical limitations that prevent them from clearing their pathways or obtaining sand for winter safety.
This program is a partnership between Augusta Age-Friendly, Augusta Parks and Recreation, Augusta Police Department, and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office. Eligible residents will receive free five-gallon buckets of salted sand and assistance with clearing snow from walkways to ensure safe access to their homes and to facilitate fuel deliveries during the winter months.
For sand delivery, Parks and Recreation staff, driving orange city trucks, will deliver one five-gallon bucket of salted sand. They will also provide refills for participants who have their own buckets from previous years. Deliveries begin after Thanksgiving.
Sheriff’s office staff will assist with clearing snow from walkways and driveways, as their time and personnel availability allow. Response times vary; having a backup plan in case they are unable to assist immediately following a storm is recommended.
Community partners who donated additional buckets for the 2024-25 winter season are Aubuchon Hardware, Hancock Lumber, Harbor Freight Tools, Home Depot and Lowe’s.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
