Gloria J. (McMullen) Chartier

ANSON – Gloria J. (McMullen) Chartier, 83, passed away peacefully Dec. 14, 2024,

Gloria (Mother, Mom, Gram, GG, Sis, Aunt Sis) was born in Kingfield Aug. 2, 1941, she was the daughter of Archie McMullen and Julitte (Fortune) Luce.

Our mom worked from a very young age selling greeting cards, picking beans and cutting hair to help her mother make ends meet. She attended Madison schools, worked in the local shoe shops and went on to study cosmetology at Una’s Hair Academy, all while she worked nights and weekends waitressing at the diner in W.T. Grant’s. Her apron was always weighted down with her tips, and she’d be excited to have us kids count them up for her. After graduating she opened her shop Gloria’s Hair Fashion in her home in Madison so she could be there for her three children. She also owned and operated Busy Scissor in Kingfield. She had a special way of lifting people up and made certain you left her salon feeling really good about yourself.

She met her soul mate Bob through a personal add he had placed, and the love story unfolded. They married shortly after, and she helped him run his business Chartier & Sons Potato Farm in Standish until they retired. They enjoyed traveling and just loved life together. He was crazy about her, and she was crazy in love with him. Together they lived in Standish, Embden, and Arizonia until his passing in July 2001.

Our mom had a strong faith in God and absolutely loved her small closely knit family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We shared many good times by the pool and fun filled holidays at her home. In the summer she loved sitting in her rocker having her coffee on the front porch in the mornings and the afternoons reading a good book on her back porch.

She was extremely gifted with many talents. Many homes are filled with her paintings, quilts and other keepsakes that she had knit or crocheted.

Our mom was selfless, an absolute character and always full of mischief.

She is predeceased by her parents, husband, and little sister Linda. As well as many close friends that she spoke of often.

Gloria is survived by her children, Michael Landry of Madison, Cheryl (Paul) Daigle of Anson, and Donna Plourde of Anson. Grandchildren Brad (Jess) Landry, Kira (Ben) Stinchfield, and Joshua Plourde. Great grandchildren, Brooke and Tucker Landry, Everly and Abel Plourde. Her sisters Joyce Tranten and Susan Griffin (Vassalo). Hazen McMullen (her cousin but more like a brother), many nieces and nephews, special cousins, a long list of special friends far too long to mention, and her dear cats that remained by her side, Mystery and Patches.

Our mom touched so many lives with her generosity and caring nature. Giving back and lifting people up was the way she lived her life. It’s hard to imagine our lives without her, but she will forever live in the hearts of each of us. We have a special Angel to watch over us now.

The family would also like to thank the staff at MGMC Hospice Comfort Care; Michelle, Heather, Kate, Franny (Nancy). You were so supportive and just wonderful with mom; she really enjoyed the time she spent with each of you. We can’t thank you enough for the exceptional care you provided. Wendy Dicranian, Karen, Melinda and the staff at Somerset Primary Care, mom thought the world of you ladies. And also, special dear friends Rowena, Cheryl and Tracey for all your love and support that you gave us.

In lieu of flowers her wishes were to donate to the Humane Society in Gloria’s memory
