WATERVILLE — A single-wide mobile home was damaged by fire early Sunday at 64 Ford Drive in Waterville, officials said.

Smoke detectors alerted the home’s four residents to the fire and they exited the dwelling safely.

The residents reported the fire after seeing evidence of flames above their kitchen cabinets, according to Chief Jason Frost of the Waterville Fire Department.

“They had come out, noticed smoke,” Frost said. “They opened up a kitchen cabinet, saw a glow up in the top of the cabinet, and it was above the cabinet in the ceiling.”

The fire caused heavy fire damage to the kitchen, and smoke and heat damaged much of the home, which is at the Countryside Mobile Home Park, off West River Road. No other building was damaged.

The cause of the fire had not been determined by Sunday afternoon, according to Frost.

The Waterville, Fairfield, Oakland and Winslow fire departments responded to the fire at 2:45 a.m. and extinguishing the flames quickly, Frost said. The American Red Cross was contacted to help the home’s residents.

“The crews had a very quick knockdown, but the fire was extensive in that area,” Frost said. “So heavy smoke and heat damage in the other bedrooms on the other end of the trailer. They may be able to save some of their belongings, but it’s tough to tell when you start pulling things out how bad the smoke damage is sometimes.”

The residents, a family with two children, were not able to get their cats out the home, but Frost said Waterville firefighters saved both animals.

Frost said the outcome could have been much different had the home’s smoke detectors not been working.

“At 2:45 in the morning, that’s usually when people are sound asleep,” Frost said. “So that’s a wonderful thing that they had working smoke detectors. It definitely saved some lives, I’d say.”
