HALLOWELL — The annual Bonfire of the Trees, benefiting firefighters, is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 4, at Granite City Park, 1 Winthrop St.
People can bring an undecorated Christmas tree between 3-4:45 p.m. to toss on the bonfire. The bonfire will be lit around sunset, and the Taiko drummers will perform, according to a news release from host Vision Hallowell.
Those who attend are asked to bring a suggested donation of $10 per tree, with all funds going to the Hallowell Firefighters Association. There also will be hot cocoa and an opportunity to try to “fill the jeep” with canned goods for the food pantry; attendees are asked to bring any non-perishables they can spare.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
