AUGUSTA — A woman was arrested Saturday after allegedly setting fire to a staircase outside an apartment complex in Augusta.
Authorities responded to a reported fire set beneath a staircase on the porch outside 7 Boothby St. just before 5 a.m. Saturday, Maine Department of Public Safety Lt. Aaron Turcotte said in a news release.
A photo from the scene showed pipes covered in ash exposed beneath broken floorboards. The wooden stairs above were damaged from heat and smoke.
“7 Boothby St., is a vacant three-story apartment complex,” Turcotte said. “Arriving units located a fire on the first-floor exterior porch and quickly extinguished the fire.”
Amanda Condon, 37, of Augusta, was identified as a suspect and arrested “based on evidence found at the scene and statements made by Ms. Condon,” Turcotte said.
She was evaluated and interviewed at Augusta’s MaineGeneral Medical Center before being booked at the Kennebec County jail, where she remains Thursday evening, Turcotte wrote in the release.
